Dot the T Productions Sets up Muskoka Lakes Summer Theatre
By Kim Kerr
Most Canadians know that WWI fighter ace Billy Bishop – a hero on both sides of the Atlantic and a recipient of Victoria Cross – hailed from Owen Sound, Ontario. But how many of you know of his strong roots and connections to Muskoka?
In fact, Bishop was a frequent visitor to Muskoka in the post-WWI years, having married Margaret Eaton Burden, granddaughter of Timothy Eaton. It just so happened that the famous founder of the Eatons retail empire owned a luxury cottage – well, more country estate than cottage – on Lake Rosseau. Bishop also started a successful air service between Muskoka and Toronto, thus cementing his connections further.
So it’s only fitting, then, that, Dot The T Productions, a Muskoka-based professional theatre Company, should celebrate the region’s connection to the war hero – not to mention the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 – with a repeat of its superb production of Billy Bishop Goes to War. And better still, the Muskoka Lakes summer theatre production of this classic Canadian play will be hosted on Lake Rosseau at the New Baldwin’s Resort in Windermere.
“It’s very exciting to have Bishop back in Muskoka,” says the show’s producer, Jan Jacklin, a Muskoka resident herself.
Summer Theatre on Lake Rosseau
Working with area arts group Muskoka Chautauqua, Dot The T is providing residents and cottagers alike a great opportunity to get out and enjoy not just Billy Bishop Goes to War, but the Norm Foster play, On A First Name Basis.
Starring in both productions is award-winning actor William Colgate, a professional actor who also now lives in Muskoka’s Lake of Bays area. Performances of Billy Bishop at new Baldwin’s resort start at 7:30pm on Fridays throughout July, and a with a buffet dinner being served at 6pm. On A First Name Basis will be performed at the Peninsula Recreation Centre in Minett on Thursday evenings at 8pm throughout August.
